Chapter 03 · Does it work

Do erectile dysfunction rings work?

Yes: erectile dysfunction rings work by holding blood in an erection while they are worn, which helps it stay firmer for longer, though they do not treat the cause of ED.

FirmTech, which makes the TechRing, Performance Ring and MaxPR, describes the effect as purely mechanical: a ring slows blood from flowing back out, and the benefit lasts only as long as the ring stays on. It works from the first wear with no pills or waiting. If some erection is possible, a ring can help hold it.

Do rings help you stay hard?

Yes. Staying hard is their main job. Gentle, even pressure at the base slows blood from draining, so an erection lasts. They help most when you can get an erection but lose it too soon. A ring cannot create an erection from nothing; for that, men often talk to a doctor about medication or a vacuum pump.

How an ED ring works

An erection needs blood vessels, hormones and nerves working together. Blood fills the penis, and the erection lasts as long as that blood stays put. A tension ring at the base slows the outflow.

FirmTech's rings add an anatomical detail: one loop sits behind the testicles and one around the base of the penis. FirmTech says that spreads pressure evenly, which is why its rings can be firm without being harsh, and why they do not block ejaculation.

What rings cannot do

  • They do not cure ED or fix what is causing it.
  • They cannot create an erection when there is none at all.
  • Their effect stops when you take the ring off.

Because FirmTech notes that erection changes often mirror heart health, it is worth seeing a doctor about ongoing problems rather than only treating the symptom.

The research FirmTech cites

FirmTech lists more than 20 studies published or underway. Published examples include:

A clinical trial comparing the TechRing with RigiScan, the clinic standard, has 35 men enrolled and is still underway. See FirmTech's clinical studies page.

Which FirmTech ring works hardest?

For the firmest hold, FirmTech points to the MaxPR, its tightest ring, rated 5 of 5 for tightness, worn up to 90 minutes. For all-day comfort, the Performance Ring. For performance plus proof of whether it is helping, the TechRing measures firmness and duration each session.

Does it work: quick answers

All 40+ questions in the FAQ
Do rings help you stay hard?
Yes, that is their main job. Gentle pressure at the base slows blood from flowing back out of the penis, which helps an erection last. FirmTech describes the Performance Ring as helping you stay firmer, longer, while the MaxPR adds a tighter hold for fuller erections.
Do constriction rings work?
Constriction rings are widely used to help maintain erections, and the mechanism is simple: they slow blood from draining while worn. FirmTech cites peer-reviewed work, including a 2024 Journal of Sexual Medicine survey study comparing two medical-grade constriction devices. Results vary by person and cause, so ask a doctor if one suits you.
Is a penis ring effective?
For many men, yes, as long as some erection is possible. A ring holds the blood already there rather than creating an erection from nothing. FirmTech reports more than 40,000 rings sold, and its reviews page shows a 4.6 out of 5 rating across 101 reviews as of October 2026.
Why am I only getting semi-hard?
Erections need blood vessels, hormones and nerves working together, so a problem in any of them can leave you only semi-hard. FirmTech notes stress, sleep and blood sugar affect the nerves, and blood flow often mirrors heart health. A doctor can check the cause, and a ring can help hold firmness meanwhile.
Can 50 year old men still get hard?
Yes. Many men in their 50s and beyond have erections. FirmTech’s science page shows erectile performance declining slowly from about age 25, with most men first noticing a change around 45. A ring helps many men hold firmness as that happens, and a doctor can check for underlying causes.
How to stay hard longer naturally?
Lifestyle matters. The FirmTech app lets TechRing users see how sleep, alcohol, exercise and medication shift their scores; its example shows sleep and exercise helping while alcohol, smoking and stress hurt. A drug-free ring is another option. For persistent problems, a doctor is the right first stop.
How to get a man hard when he has ED?
Start with a doctor, since ED has many causes and some are treatable. Drug-free tools can help: a ring holds an erection once it starts, and FirmTech sells the VaxAid Deluxe vacuum pump in a TechRing bundle. Many men also use rings alongside ED medication with their doctor’s guidance.
Can I use an ED ring with ED medication?
Many men use the TechRing alongside other treatments and use the app to see what is working, according to FirmTech. FirmTech also presented research at ISSM 2024 comparing PDE5 inhibitors, the Performance Ring and both together. Talk to your doctor about your specific situation before combining treatments.
